Launched in June 2021, ECOFITEXT specialises in eco fibre production from agricultural waste, creating sustainable biodegradable products and textiles for the fashion industry.

ECOFITEXT’s business model incorporates a holistic approach that has many benefits in the agricultural value-chain.
For every ton of banana fruit produced 2 tons of plant mass is wasted and this waste is the base of our manufacturing process.

To stop and reverse the effect of global warming, it is necessary to replace non-renewable, non-degradable and synthetic materials with renewable, biodegradable, and natural materials.

The world population is growing and must be fed. However, cultivable areas are limited. And plantations intended for food production face competition from crops for utilitarian purposes, such as cotton for example. Banana fibre uses seven times less water per ton produced than cotton  and twelve times less fertilisers. Bananas remain the best solution to produce both food and fibres.

Our Vision

Our Vision is to build a thriving, local, green economy and become a major supplier of natural fibres and ecological products to the sustainable textile and fashion industry.

Our Mission

  • Protect the environment by using ecological products made from ecological fibres that are extracted from agro waste.
  • Create hygiene products that are good for health, environment and community.
  • Promote ecological textile industry research to develop the natural fibres of the future.
  • Create jobs in Burundi especially for young people and women in rural areas.
  • Support sustainability, building a community and establishing a startup ecosystem

Achievements and Milestones

  • June 2021: started producing the banana fibre manually and building a network of banana producers to collect banana stems.
  • July 2021: ECOFITEXT awarded the support and participation certificate  in Startup Afrika during a pitching event.
  • December 2021: Selected and certified in Generation-Z fashion startup launched by New fashion Zone and admission in pre-accelerator program; profiled as Startup of the Month by www.texstarted.de
  • August 2021 Member: https://dnfi.org/members/ Proudly accepted becoming a member of Discover Natural Fibres Initiative (DNFI). The DNFI highlights activities to promote greener and more efficient agricultural techniques for growing natural fibres, efforts to improve life of the poor who are involved in natural fibres work, and to encourage increased demand for natural fibres.
  • February 2022 selected in NTEEP 2022 program of Nomfro organisation and proud to be granted website development grant.
  • Our story was published in the February 2022 issue of the international newspaper Grassroots Coalition News and Modetextile
